The Grotesque has long held a fascination with the art world. At its core, it’s a symbol of metamorphosis, difference and dualism. It’s a frame within which there is no clear division or polarity - everything is interconnected and intertwined.
Grotesques are technically the hideous and marvellous creatures that guard cathedrals and gothic architecture. Similar to Gargoyles, but without the practicality of plumbing, Grotesques ward off evil spirits and keep us safe. They’re a common feature of many ancient cultures that have influenced Western art traditions.
This show presents four young artists from Warrnambool and Gunditjmara country, each of whom holds a fascination with the grotesque and incorporates that with pop culture motifs. We are proud to have the opportunity to present such formidable artists in their early careers, and look forward to watching their practice evolve into the future.
